  5.     The tour has been hailed as a phoenix-like revival of an
  6. exquisite art form that was nearly destroyed by a country's
  7. bloodshed. But almost from the start of its five-week U.S.
  8. engagement, the Classical Dance Company of Cambodia has been
  9. tangled in the ugly factionalism that still divides the
  10. artists' homeland. Last week, after dancing for a packed house
  11. in Lowell, Mass., a 24-year-old female member of the company
  12. decided to seek asylum in the U.S. Four days earlier, three
  13. other dancers sought political refuge during a concert stop in
  14. Minnesota.

  16.     The dancers' defections have touched off propaganda attacks
  17. by rival Cambodian political factions. Sponsors of the
  18. 36-member troupe have accused enemies of the communist
  19. government of Hun Sen of intimidating the dancers with death
  20. threats and pressuring them to defect in order to embarrass
  21. Phnom Penh. A spokesman for Prince Sihanouk denied the charges
  22. and in turn accused Hun Sen of exploiting the dancers to polish
  23. his regime's image in the U.S.
